Skimmias are best planted outdoors in full or partial shade - perhaps under a tree or in the shadow of a garden wall.

They like to be watered often, but detest being left to sit in soggy soil - a spot with good drainage is essential.

You can enjoy your Japanese Skimmia indoors for a week or two, before it needs to be popped outside - either still in its pot on a garden terrace or directly into your flower bed. If your soil is poor, dig a wide hole and fill a little with compost, mixing it well into the surrounding soil. Finish by watering well.

If shrub is bare-root, look for a discoloration somewhere near the base; this mark is likely where the soil line was. If soil is too sandy or too clayey, add organic matter. This will help with both drainage and water holding capacity. Fill soil, firming just enough to support shrub. Finish by mulching and watering well.
